Vancouver '05
I was bored and had a lot of vacation time, so I decided to jet off to Vancouver, Canada for a week in October '05. Here's what I did and saw.
View From My Room
The View from my hotel room. I cheated a bit, this is standing on the dresser by the window to see above the hotel roof.
My Room II
View from the corner featured in the other picture.
My Room in Vancouver
View from the doorway of my hotel room in Vancouver.
Lost Lagoon
Lost Lagoon in Stanley Park in the rain.
Beaver Lake I
I finally found Beaver Lake after getting totally turned around and wasting a lot of time and energy circling the aquarium.
Blair Park Project
Getting lost in Stanley Park - Blair Witch style.
Lions Gate Bridge
Lions Gate Bridge, connecting downtown Vancouver to North and West Vancouver. On the downtown side, this bridge comes from the Stanley Park Causeway, which goes right through the middle of the park. There's also a seaplane up in the sky - I saw many of these flying over the park. The green thing that you can bareley see on the big rock is a statue of a woman in a wetsuit.
Brockton Lighthouse
Brockton Lighthouse on the Stanley Park seawall.
Trail in Stanley Park
A typical trail in Stanley Park.
City from Park
A view of the city and marina from inside Stanley Park.
Closer Ducks
Getting a little closer to the ducks.
Ducks in Lagoon
Some of the many waterfowl in Stanley Park.
Lost Lagoon Fountain
The fountain in the middle of Lost Lagoon.
Stanley Park and Mountains
A view from the outside of Stanley Park at Chilco and Robson.
Lagoon and City
View of the city over Lost Lagoon. If you're following along, you can see the fountain featured in an earlier picture in the background on the left.
Equestrian/Pedestrian
I had to laugh when I saw the signs at this overpass in Stanley Park. I love it! I was tempted to live on the wild side and take the left path, but I chickend out. For the record, the two sides looked exactly the same. I didn't see any horses.
Who's that Handsome Devil?
Practicing my self photography at Beaver Lake.
Duck in Trees
Everyone knows ducks fly, but have you ever seen one up in the trees sleeping like this? Its really trippy if I crop this one so the duck is in the lower left corner.
Colorful Duck
I just thought this guy was colorful, so I took a picture. Still at Beaver Lake.
Ducky Friend
I made friends with this duck while sitting on a bench resting. Clearly too many people feed these ducks, despite the numerous signs warning not to. She kept eating gravel and looking up at me wondering why I wasn't understanding what I was supposed to do.
Beaver Lake again
Another view of Beaver Lake. I was expecting something more like the Lost Lagoon, but smaller, but this is what the whole thing looks like, covered with lily pads and other plants.
Yet another Beaver Lake Shot
Yet another view of Beaver Lake, this time featuring an area of slightly more open water.
Me on Grouse
Me in front of North Vancouver at the top of Grouse Mountain.
Rocky Grind
There aren't always steps, sometimes you have to make due with rocks. Again, this early shot looks tame after seeing the top.
Wide Grouse View
Wider view. North Vancouver, with the Lions Gate Bridge into Stanley Park, with downtown Vancouver to its left.
Grouse View - Stanley Park
If I'm oriented right, that's the Lions Gate Bridge coming out of Stanley Park, with downtown Vancouver to the left of the park.
Grouse View - North Vancouver
North Vancouver is below.
Grouse View
View just to the right of the views featuring North Vancouver.
Early Going on the Grind
Early on the Grouse Grind. There are steps somewhat like this almost the whole way. Looking at this now, I can't believe how flat the early part is.
Capilano Suspension Bridge
The obligatory view of the Capilano Suspension Bridge.
Capilano River and Bridge
Capilano Suspension Bridge (near top), and the river below it.
Autum Ski Slope
This is a ski slope during the winter. Top of Grouse Mountain.
Worst. Sign. Ever.
Its hard to appreciate just how demoralizing this sign is unless you've seen it in person. I lingered here for about five minutes contemplating turning back. The Grouse Grind record was recently set at 26 minutes, 26 seconds. At 26:26, I was standing near this sign.
Wimps
Wimps on the way up Grouse Mountain.
Up Up and Away
More vertical on the Grind. I forget exactly, but I think this is near 1/2 way up the Grind. You can see its already considerably steeper than the earl going. I stopped taking pictures after this, had to concentrate, as it got a little dicey in the last half.
Trees and Mountains
Some nice trees and mountains. Taken from Capilano Bridge Park.
Tram Cables
These are the tram cables up Grouse Mountain. That's the way the lazy people go, but I'm going to climb it.
Big White Bird
Lost Lagoon in Stanley Park.
Racoon Party
Its a racoon party and everyone's invited.
Two Swimming Racoons
They come in pairs too.
Cute Swimming Racoon
Awww, isn't this little guy cute?
Buildings and Lagoon
Ominous clouds over downtown Vancouver.
Downtown
Nice cloudy day over downtown Vancouver.
Bird on a Rock
Anyone know what kind of bird this is? It would make a better title if I knew.
